European GitHub alternatives

We all love github but in my opinion it has also some major downsides:

a) It’s hosted in the US which means you’re pretty much fcked when it comes to privacy (e.g. if you have customer data somewhere in your repo), responsibility and liability. I’ve no doubt today, that the GitHub folks are awesome, but times change and if some of your customers sues you, you’re in trouble first.

b) it’s rather slow compared to european hosted services

c) while it’s awesome to publish open source projects it’s probably a security risk to have public and private repos “just one click away”. Of course it’s an “user error” if you click something wrong, but hey, who’s perfect?
